Who is the Somers PTA?

  • The Somers PTA is a volunteer, non-profit organization made of up parents, teachers and community members who care about the welfare of our children and who want to be involved and make a difference in our children’s school experience.
  • The Somers PTA represents students in Somers Elementary School (SES) and Mabelle B. Avery Middle School (MBA) and is a guest in the school system.
  • The Somers PTA is governed by by-laws and those of the Connecticut PTA and National PTA and also must follow the Somers Board of Education rules and regulations.
  • Somers PTA is nonpartisan- Under IRS regulations, nonprofits may not intervene in partisan political campaigns – it could jeopardize our non profit  tax-exempt status.

What are the Somers PTA Goals for the ’09-’10 school year?

  • Increase parent and family involvement by 10%
  • “Go Green” by going paperless with all PTA school communications by the end of 2009
  • Promote a diverse cultural experience for the children through successful and creative fund raising efforts
  • Promote a vibrant and informed community through effective and efficient communications

How is the Somers PTA funded?

  • While a small portion of monies come from membership dues, the majority of the funding for our programs and activities comes from the Spring and Fall PTA fundraisers.  Without these critical fundraisers the Somers PTA wouldn’t be able to accomplish nearly as much as we do.

Is there a time commitment if I join the PTA?

  • No.  How much time, if any, you donate to the PTA is entirely up to you.  While we would love for all members to be actively involved, today’s busy life schedules don’t always permit it.  If you have the time and would like to volunteer, great!  And if you don’t, we still want you as a member, to keep you apprised of what’s happening with the PTA and in our schools.

Why Join?

  • Studies show that, in general, children of involved parents have better school experiences, higher grades and test scores, and fewer disciplinary problems.  One of the best ways parents can be involved and show their support for their children’s schools is by joining PTA.

      Your membership includes:

      • Getting to know other parents, staff and community members through various meetings and programs
      • Staying informed by receiving valuable information on parenting, education, health and safety topic
      • Having a voice…promoting quality education while communicating with local and state decision-makers on issues and concerns facing today’s children
      • Discounts and promotional items from PTA sponsors
      • Access to www.pta.org, which has thousands of articles to better equip members to be involved in children’s education and schools including updates on legislation affecting families and public schools, information about how to advance personal skills, and more….
